flattr this!

The Stable build of Chrome is being released today, and there is a whole bunch of new improvements that come with this release. It’s the latest major update in Google’s six week release cycle for Chrome builds, and a lot of work has been to prepare the browser for next generation web application capabilities and security features.

Perhaps the biggest new feature is Chrome’s integration of a PDF reader that is based on the Foxit SDK. Just like Flash, it will be sandboxed to prevent vulnerabilities in PDF files to be able to exploit a user’s system.

$4,000 in security rewards were doled out to researchers that discovered potential threats to the browser. These included crash issues with malformed video, issues with event handling and XPath handling.

Chrome OS features have been added, such as Chromoting now available in “about:labs”, a baseline UI for mobile data activation through a wireless carrier and some clean up for panel windows.

Some of the Chrome Web Store webapp issues included adding background webapps into the release, setting up a UI for disabling background web apps and some specifics on how new tabs with default apps will advertise the Chrome Web Store.

A major release, to be sure.

The thing I found a bit weird was the statement in googlechromereleases.blogspot.com giving the impression that Chrome 8 stable is the first stable release to feature the built-in PDF viewer. It’s been there ever since version 6 stable!
