Google Shows Off its Tablet Concept
Posted on 01. Feb, 2010 by Daniel Cawrey in Features, News
On the Chromium projects site, Google has quietly posted some pictures and a video of their ideas of what a future Chrome OS tablet would look like. What’s interesting to me is that the video shows browser windows that are treated as objects which can be readily manipulated in the screen for the best use possible depending on the site you are at.
And there is no doubt that the demo is showing that fact that you can multi-task with the tablet for a reason. One of the biggest selling points for a Google tablet as a competitor to the iPad is the fact that you will be able to carry out more than one process at a time:
But the video only explores one concept. The pictures indicate that Google is experimenting with several different UIs. One is using sidebar tabs in order to navigate, another show large buttons above the Chrome tabs in addition to just a screen where you can manipulate the browser that the clip above shows. So further development of a tablet for Chrome OS is anyone’s guess.
Although it appears that they are trying to develop this operating system based on many different types of PCs, it’s clear that Google is just trying to develop the best user experience that they can for a device like this. You can get to all the tablet pictures that are on the Chromium site from here.
Enjoy!

[...] It’s worth pointing out that there almost certainly be multiple “Google Tablets”, given that the Chrome OS won’t be tied to a single device. That said, Google is working with select hardware partners to ensure that it runs on devices that are up to its specifications, and there may be one tablet device that is designated as the “Google Tablet”, much as the Nexus One is the “Google Phone”. thats interesting… however the ipad has mass market appeal due to its simplicity, i suspect this concept with its folders and files based operation is geared to the more technolo0gy savvy people… what would be nice is a compromise… where the ui is as clean and as basic as possible for every day functions like surfing, reading, watching video and music, with the option to delve into a more standardised pc like experience as an option. if used like the ipad its a portable media centre with internet and books… this device could do that and retain its simplicity whilst adding the option for complex operations.

Nice concept – if Apple and Google compete against each other the final winner might likely be us users – Apple sharpening their iPad with single-task, Google with multi-task. I hope Google will materialize the concept quickly.
P.S. That demo looks creepingly similar to the scenes in the movie Minority Report – are they trying to achieve that?

This looks very rudimentary for a company like Google. I wonder if they wanted to release something quickly to let people know they don’t want to be left out of the “tablet wars?”
Also, look at the size of the hands compared to the canvas of the tablet. If these are any indication of what they’re going for, this thing would be HUGE!

Anyone notice how the keyboard in the demo looks almost identical to the iPad keyboard…?
Almost like they take the idea of a touch screen and apply it to the iMac…
iPad is not supposed to be a laptop…and I think that is the key. As Apple said themselves, its the inbetween. Better at web than a iPod Touch, and cheaper than a Powerbook.
And when I find myself sitting on the couch watching lost, I could see myself pulling out an iPad to check my Facebook. Simple. Sleek. Powerful.

To me it looks like a larger iPad with multi-tasking.
If you look at it more, you could conclude that it wouldn’t work (multuple windows…) all that nice on a screen the size of the iPad.
No really new stuff. But also the iPad doesn’t show something revolutionary.
Nonetheless, it’s nice to see different concepts by different people.

This only confirms the iPad is heading on the right course, as if the creative base flocking with ideas to Adobe was not enough:

IT’s easy to put a concept together, but actually creating one is a different story. Don’t get me wrong, if anyone can do it, Google can. Nexus One!
I’m not sure I like the concept of on-screen keyboards, but, they’re designed for minimal typing, of course.
