IT Patent Company ISYS Technologies Sues Google Over the Use of “Chromebook”

Posted on 07. Jun, 2011 by in Chrome OS, News

flattr this!

ISYS Technologies, who is the parent company of the manufacturer of the ChromiumPC desktop Chromium OS machine, has filed suit against Google to block the use of “Chromebook” on their soon to be released lineup of Chrome OS devices. When I first wrote about the ChromiumPC, I did not write favorably about the subsidiary company, Xi3, because of their claim of having the world’s first Chrome OS device. Now it seems their story is much clearer.

ISYS Technologies is a patent trolling company. As in, they hold patents and trademarks for the sole purpose of using legal means to make money. That explains why I found out about the suit through a press release; what other company would sue and then submit a press release about it?

I debated even posting this, but it’s relevant to Google and Chrome OS. It shows that when a company such as Google makes enough money that others are going to try to get their piece of the pie however it is that they can. But seriously, how can ISYS create a device called “ChromiumPC” and run it with Chromium OS, then sue the company that help create it?

What’s even more baffling is what this has to do with Chromebook at all, since Chrome OS and Chromium OS are different projects, even though they share some of the same code. What do you think?

We would all be much better off is companies like this disappeared from the face of the earth. They seem to do nothing but drive up the cost of everything for everyone.

Obviously you didn’t read the suit that was filed. Google seems to have done some pretty questionable stuff leading up to this. It also is pretty obvious that Isys owns some pretty complicated intellectual property that it actually uses and is not just sitting around waiting to sue people. I think you have it wrong.

What’s questionable “stuff” is putting out a press release about suing someone. What does that accomplish other than gaining attention?

A press release is questionable? Well, not if you’re trying to let people know what you’re doing? They’re at least doing it above board.
One other thing, When did ISYS say that “ChromiumPC” has anything to do with Google Chrome or Chromium OS?

We have dealt personally with Isys as a small leasing company. They were the worst people to deal with! They would not pay their rent and would threaten us every time we enforced the lease. They promised to sue us every time we turned around. They were all talk. We were so glad when their lease expired and we could finally get rid of them. They are extremely “sue happy!”
