New NVIDIA Tegra Chip Due This Spring, Supported by Chrome OS

The Tegra series of chips from NVIDA offer powerful processing and graphics capabilities in a small package based on ARM technology. Indeed, some of the most high end mobile devices are sporting the Tegra 2 such as the Motorola Atrix 4G. Tablets are also expected to take advantage of the Tegra 2, but there isn’t one that has emerged to take on the iPad, at least not yet.
Regardless, Engadget has found out that NVIDIA plans on releasing a 1.2GHz dual core chip sometime soon – production starts this quarter – that will be 3D capable.
This is the leaked roadmap indicating a new clock speed.
Over at the Chromium site, it looks like developers are already asking for 1.2GHz clock support for the Tegra. This doesn’t mean anything other than it’s needed for testing the new chip, but it shows that ARM based processors are being put under the microscope for use in Chrome OS. It’s no wonder: great graphics, low power and small size is a part of the chips cachet.
Maybe we’ll see an ARM device for Chrome OS sooner than I expected. Samsung, which is one of two officially announced manufacurers of a commercial device, s planning to have the Tegra 2 inside their second Galaxy Tab slate.
