The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Acer is planning to unveil a lineup of tablets on November 23. That’s what CEO Gianfranco Lanci has said, although there has been no indication on what operating system the platform will use.
Acer has said in the past that it planned to be first to market with Chrome OS. Though it seemed as if they were going to be forerunners in the launch to release Chrome OS, the speculation has focused on the company releasing a netbook and not a tablet.
It’s hard to tell from this what’s going to happen, but the newest version of Android is set to be released soon as well. November is shaping up to be an interesting month.
Google Trademarks “Speedbook” for Computer Hardware

BNET’s Erik Sherman was doing some snooping in the U.S. Patent and Trademark database and came across something interesting: Google has trademarked the term “Speedbook”. Under the category labeled Goods and Services for the filing, it states “computer hardware”.
BNET is a tech business blog owned by CBS.
The trademark was filed on February 13, 2010. If you want to, go to the trademark database yourself and put in the term; it’s the first result in the search. A Chinese company held the trademark briefly in 2009 for a period of ten months.
I’m not sure what Google’s plan would be for this, perhaps considering labeling Chrome OS devices under a different classification than a netbook or laptop. Of course, back in February the Nexus One was only a month old; it’s possible that at the time Google was planning on releasing their own line of hardware.
At this point, hardware partners such as HTC and Acer are rumored to be first to market with Chrome OS devices. HTC is expected to launch a tablet in November. Acer has a spec netbook they are currently testing that could arrive as soon as the Chrome Web Store, a directory filled with applications specifically for Chrome, is launched.
Unreleased Acer Netbook Shows Up in Chromium Bug Reports

A blog that is based on Acer netbooks has put together a post about some bug reporting that has showed up on the Chromium site referencing an unknown Acer model dubbed “ZGA”. According to the article, it appears that this runs concurrent with other device model numbers that come from Acer. While I couldn’t find the name of the writer on this blog its author, “Macles”, seems to know a lot about computer manufacturing.
Based on the hardware specifications in the bug reports, this netbook would have some different hardware than traditional Windows-based devices. The processor is an Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz, it has a SanDisk pSSD-S2 8GB, 1.3 megapixel webcam and an ambient light sensor.
Despite these specs, now that the Atom N550 dual core is shipping, one would think that they would swap the processor from something newer, but it all depends on price points. The article further speculates that this ZGA netbook could concievably ship in September, based on the timeline for testing in the bug reports.
It’s been known for some time that Acer has ambitiously planned to enter the Chrome OS market, with an executive boasting that the company would sell a million of them this year. So if that’s going to happen, they better release one pretty soon.
