delllinuxThe Linux team at Dell has been periodically releasing builds that are focused on testing what Chrome OS can do for their line of Mini netbooks. A few days ago, they put out a build based on the latest Chromium Project version from February 11. Also in this is support for the latest Broadcom drivers, however there is a user that has reported that they are having issues with wi-fi with their Mini 9 netbook.

Regardless, this has been tested by Dell for the Mini 9, Mini 10, 10v and Latitude 2100. It’s pretty cool to see them doing this, and prior to releasing these builds I had not idea that they had dedicated support for the Linux platform. In the public eye, Dell is showing us that they are preparing for a time when they will sell commercial products that are loaded with Chrome, and there are several benefits for them to do this.

This is especially true in terms of being competitive on cost for netbooks and eventually tablets or other gadgets as well. With every computer manufacturer moving into smaller devices, expect to see a mobile computing market have an array of devices that people can choose from.

chromezero1A new build of Chrome OS by Hexxeh was released today under the moniker Chrome OS Zero. After several false starts with expectations of a release last week (due to an MBR problem), we finally see a new and updated version of Chrome OS that promises to be more polished and even easier to use than past iterations. This release is based off of a newer Chromium OS code version from Google and offers some new features, which among other things includes new artwork.

There is also:

  • Additional Broadcom wireless support
  • Limited multi-language capabilities
  • Extension support
  • Reduced file size
  • Speed improvements

The most important new capability is probably extension support. Plus the new designs on Hexxeh’s website look pretty cool.

You can load this from USB  so you can boot your PC from a USB drive, and then you can hit the power button on your machine to restart whenever you want to return to your normal OS. There are instructions on how do this right here.

We’ll give it a try and write up a review in a bit.

The image master extrordinaire Hexxeh has release a new version of his Diet Chrome build, called Chrome OS Cherry. According to his site, the new version is updated with bug fixes as well as wireless support for Broadcom and Ralink devices. We’ve heard that Hexxeh’s builds are solid, and that wireless support is running smooth on this version.

What’s so great about this version of Chrome OS? Well, it’s USB loaded, which means you can boot your PC from a USB drive, and then you shut down Chrome whenever you want to return back to your normal OS. You’ll need to be able to change you boot settings to load the USB in your BIOS, however.

You can get the build as a torrent here. You’ll need to extract the image and use a program to write the image to a USB device. Note that writing to the USB drive will erase anything that was stored there. Once, you get past that, start up your PC with the USB drive. The username and password to get into the operating system is facepunch/facepunch.

Enjoy!
