The image master extrordinaire Hexxeh has release a new version of his Diet Chrome build, called Chrome OS Cherry. According to his site, the new version is updated with bug fixes as well as wireless support for Broadcom and Ralink devices. We’ve heard that Hexxeh’s builds are solid, and that wireless support is running smooth on this version.

What’s so great about this version of Chrome OS? Well, it’s USB loaded, which means you can boot your PC from a USB drive, and then you shut down Chrome whenever you want to return back to your normal OS. You’ll need to be able to change you boot settings to load the USB in your BIOS, however.

You can get the build as a torrent here. You’ll need to extract the image and use a program to write the image to a USB device. Note that writing to the USB drive will erase anything that was stored there. Once, you get past that, start up your PC with the USB drive. The username and password to get into the operating system is facepunch/facepunch.

Enjoy!

At this point, there are already several different flavors of Chrome available.  It all depends on what kind of system you plan on installing Chrome OS on, and we can give you a run down on what you need to know.

If you want to run Chrome on a virtual machine (VM) such as Sun’s VirtualBox or VMware, you can get a compiled version of Chrome OS here.

As reported earlier, there is a version that has been released by Dell that has been successfully tested on their Mini 10v. The build is loaded via a USB device, and you will need one that has a spare 8 GB. You can get it here.

There is a smaller more comprehensive version of Chrome OS that has been developed as well. According to the developer, it offers a wide array of support in terms of hardware. This is by far the most comprehensive site that is out there, and also offers excellent instructions on how to install Chrome. The version is called Chrome OS Cherry, and the build supports wifi and can be loaded on a 1GB memory stick.
