Google has worked to upload some new videos into their Chrome YouTube channel this morning, but the clips currently are not available for viewing. However, there are some screenshots to take a look at of what appears to be some graphic-rich webapps. One is most certainly a game while the other looks to be a digital version of Sports Illustrated.

The first shot comes from a video titled “Chrome OS Tour”. No hiding what that will be about.

Google Cloud Print Requires Chrome 9

Google’s printing service for Chrome and Chrome OS is called Google Cloud Print. Unbeknownst to me, it is already in Beta, but you’ll need to have Chrome 9 in order for it to work. Does that mean there will be no printing on initial previews of Chrome OS devices that may be happening tomorrow. At this point it’s hard to tell.

Developers: Get Ready for Chrome Web Store; December 7 Seems Real

chromewebstorelogo2Google is taking some time to email Chrome extension developers about the fact the the Chrome Web Store will be launching very soon. As we’ve said many times before, Chrome OS and the Chrome Web Store very much go hand in hand with one another for a launch. Indeed, even All Things Digital, who will be holding a conference in San Francisco next week where an unveiling may happen, is announcing that the webapp store will be launched December 7.

Remember, this may all just be a preview for what’s to come. But surely Google has been working on this project quite hard all year. Hopefully we’ll see not just a glimpse but an actual product that will be available soon. That, of course, remains to be seen.

Could this be like the launch for the Nexus One where sales of a device started almost immediately? That would very much be ideal. With the holiday season approaching here in the US, getting devices into the mail prior to shipping deadline week would be optimal. It’s all dependant on how comfortable Google feels about their product.

What are you expecting for next week?

Google Cloud Picker: Another Part of the Cloud Ecosystem

Posted on 03. Dec, 2010 by . 1 Comments

The launch of the Chrome OS platform is very dependent on Google having a number of other services available for users. After all, being a cloud operating system will require heavy usage of the web. So when reports started emerging of Google’s Cloud Picker service accidently being sent into the wild, I thought about how storage in Google Docs is not really going to suffice for media files and the like.

Despite my reservations for the name itself, Cloud Picker will find its place among yet-to-be released services like the Chrome Web Store, Chromoting and Cloud Print as an important facet for Chrome OS users. I’m excited to try it out.

Chrome Web Store Gets New Logo, Release Coming Soon?

We’ve all thought that the Chrome Web Store would have made its debut by now. But that obviously has not been the case. Nevertheless, development work on Chrome’s app store is moving along quickly as evidenced by, for example, an option in Chromium to remove the CRX extension requirement with the option to use manifest files, which is a method of installing hosted webapps.

It was tablet glory for Acer yesterday in New York as they unveiled a lineup of slates and a smartphone running Android. eWeek: Android Likely Changing Chrome OS Strategy

Posted on 21. Nov, 2010 by . 1 Comments

flattr this!

It appears as if we won’t see a Chrome OS device on the market before the end of 2010. That may be because of the resounding success that Android has had over the past year.

Looking back to this time twelve months ago, there were no tablets and Android was but a niche player in the smartphone market. This was the time when Chrome OS was first previewed and the source code was opened.

In an article written by eWeek’s Clint Boulton, he quotes IDC analyst Al Hilwa on a possible shift by Google in its cloud strategy.

“Something happened on the way to birth Chrome OS, and it is called Android,” Hilwa said. “Android has taught Google that maybe the cloud is not everything and there are ways to change the OS market dynamics without a pure cloud approach.”

We’ve talked in this space about the Chrome OS rival Jolibook netbook, which runs a version of Linux that allows one to install native Ubuntu applications as well as runs webapps through Chromium. Perhaps that may be a path that Google takes.

With so much riding on the success of the Chrome Web Store and Chrome itself, that doesn’t seem likely, however. Google is championing the web in its marketing and has a better chance trying to push an entirely new alternative in terms of operating systems with Chrome OS as it is.

Still, there must be a reason behind this delay, right?

Gooogle security researcher Ulfar Erlingsson spoke in July at the Google Faculty Summit on cloud computing and software security.

While users aren’t supposed to have to worry about security and other associated software problems with cloud computing, it requires careful thought and planning for the provider. This talk delves into webapps, Chrome and the Chrome Web Store.
