A lot of hype has gone into the launch of Google TV, with a first glimpse of all sort of whiz-bang features coming during this year’s Google I/O developer conference. In the time since we’ve seen various demos from Google’s managers culminating in the release of a Logitech set top box for $299 and a $1899 Sony HDTV on DISH Network to start things off.

But what is Google TV other than a desktop computer? When the Logitech Revue box hit the FCC, the mobile computing blog Lilliputing remarked on how closely the internal components resembled that of a nettop, which is a basically a small form factor mobile desktop. Let’s see:  Intel Atom processor, extra USB ports and 4GB of RAM. All that’s missing here is some Windows action.

And that’s the difference. In Lance Ulanoff’s PCMag piece “Google TV’s Dark Side“; he expresses his concern about possible threats attacking the Google TV box, causing a user unconscionable havoc.

Google TV is coming and the hardware to make it happen is going to be showing up in stores soon. The first wave of devices will be arriving with Logitech holding a press conference on Wednesday and Sony already showing off their HDTV that has Google’s Android plus Chrome browser platform built in.

Now, the Google folks have went live with their Google TV website, and its goal is to provide prospective customers information on how it works. There are a lot of features that the platform provides and a lot more options than regular television, so the aim here is to dazzle people. Even the site itself offers more interactivity than your normal Google site.

Google TV Coming October 17?

googletvoctoberEngadget has gotten its hands on an internal document from Best Buy that says the Google TV launch was going to happen the first weekend in October – on the 3rd – but has been pushed back two weeks to 10/17. The service is coming out on satellite provider DISH Network in the US, and will operate with an Intel based set top box from Logitech. Sony is also going to sell TVs with the service integrated.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently said that the company expects to expand Google TV worldwide in 2011, so the delay is probably a calculated plan to make sure that all stars will align for the launch. Google TV is expected to bring with it the launch of the Chrome Web Store, an application market for larger screens that use the Chrome browser, which is the main portal on the Android-based Google TV.

There hasn’t been any word yet on pricing for Google TV, but I suspect it won’t be cheap. The Logitech box in itself runs basically a netbook setup and the Sony TVs that were shown at IFA Berlin last week cost several thousand dollars. Engadget also got its mits on a customer survey from DISH that suggests $220 for the box and a $3 premium per month for the service.  We’ll see if Google TV is fit for the masses, or will start out as an early adopter toy.

AndroidandMe has video from IFA Berlin on the Sony HDTV that is powered by Google TV. It’s a 46-inch model with some interesting design quirks such as an all-white rear panel and metal brackets that prop the TV up.

Expected to launch in the United States on DISH Network this fall, Google TV is going to wrap satellite services and online video all into one service powered by Android and Chrome. Sony taped up all the ports, and you couldn’t actually use the Google TV functionality. Oh well.
