Some Chromium hardware? Now that’s what I’ve been talking about!
You don’t have to wait for Chromebooks to arrive on June 15, wait an indeterminate amount of time for Chromeboxes to appear or even hold off for that mystical Acer “Surfstation” (hint: it’s not real). Nope, because you can right this moment get yourself an ARM-powered Chromium OS desktop appropriately called the Trim Slice!
Powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core ARM processor, an HDMI output (shown above) and some SD card slots for external storage, this can be yours for just $199! Of course, should you want internal memory, Bluetooth or wifi that’s going to cost you more.
I’d love to put the Trim Slice through its paces, as I continue to hear rumblings that Chrome OS on ARM processors really scream. That would be especially true for a device that has been specifically optimized for the platform by the folks in Mountain View.
I could see real-world applications for something like the Trim Slice. The number one place I would envision it would be internet cafes in Asia. What a cheap alternative to traditional Windows desktops!
We’ve been waiting for units for this to start popping up, and it’s about time. This starts to make one wonder how off the folks at Google along with their hardware partners have really been on Chromebook pricing. For two hundred bucks, you’re getting a real barebones system with the Trim Slice. Is the $349 for Acer’s Chromebook really that out of wack?
