Thousands of Jolicloud App Users May Have a Point

I will admit that I was tempted to dismiss the Jolicloud App of simply jumping on the cloud computing bandwagon. But you know what? I’ve reconsidered. While I feel ambivalence to certain features, Jolicloud’s “App Store” really shows some possibility. And yes, it really does appear to have a ton of users in the Chrome Web Store.
Jolicloud’s interface is very similar to Chrome, almost to the point of redundancy. Like Chrome, Jolicloud presents your web apps as icons lined up in rows across the screen. To access your apps, you simply click on them, and it will take you to the web page from which they are hosted. There is a search box on the top, a bit like Google’s Omnibox, but not as integrated into the web as Chrome.
The sharing aspect of the Jolicloud app doesn’t work for me. While I understand how powerful sharing things can be on the internet, it would be more helpful if Jolicloud users could share their favorite applications outside the Jolicloud user base so others — perhaps their Facebook friends or Twitter followers — could be exposed to more web based applications.
5 Positives That Make Webapps the Future

It was pointed out to me recently that the Chrome Web Store has grown significantly since its December 9 launch. At that time, it was released with 500 webapps. Looking at the number today, with over 3,500 webapps now available, that signifies a 700% increase in the number of applications that Chrome users have available since its launch. That’s a rapid increase, and made me start to think about all of the benefits of developing web applications.
Platforms
The ability to develop across multiple platforms is a difficult issue. While we cannot definitively say that HTML5 and other open web technologies will become the go-to standard, companies like Google and Facebook are openly advocating it to independent developers. And while this is not the way Apple wants things, even to the point of conspiracy about the company against webapps, it’s where things are moving too. Flying under the radar is Mozilla who also have their own webapp market. It’s a point of ubiquity with the web – create one app through it and it can be used on any device with a modern browser.

Today Google announced the web-based Android Market, giving the platform more capability to be used on devices other than smartphones, although the apps themselves will still be downloaded and installed natively. Take a look at a demo that is being done on Motorola’s Xoom tablet.
Pretty slick. At around $800, however, would you buy a Xoom?

The road to a world with more webapps is going to lead through HTML5. Google realizes this, and they are trying to promote the standard with offerings like Chrome Experiments, the Arcade Fire project “The Wilderness Downtown” and now with an interactive book called “20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web”.
More Proof Webapps are the Real Deal

Business Insider recently did a survey asking iPad users to break down what they use their tablet for.

It appears to me that the majority of these categories can be done in the browser, except perhaps for games and “other apps”. Of course, those games and “other apps” could in theory be ported to a browser based web application should there be enough incentive for a developer to do so.
Agreed?

We’ve received a good deal of information on the Jolibook, the first hardware offering from the folks who make the Jolicloud operating system. In addition to a Intel N550 Atom processor, it has a 250GB hard drive and 720p HD video support. The company has released some pictures of the device. It certainly has some flair, but otherwise it appears to be no different than other netbooks on the market today.

Gooogle security researcher Ulfar Erlingsson spoke in July at the Google Faculty Summit on cloud computing and software security.
While users aren’t supposed to have to worry about security and other associated software problems with cloud computing, it requires careful thought and planning for the provider. This talk delves into webapps, Chrome and the Chrome Web Store.

If you are working on a webapp for the Chrome Web Store, or just have something of interest to our readers don’t hesitate to contact us. We enjoy taking a look at new apps, but sometimes it’s hard to find them because right now there is really no central directory to find them from.
Of course, that is expected to change soon. That’s why we’re posting this. So let us know. If you want to keep it a secret until the Chrome Web Store launches, that’s understandable. Just don’t forget that we are here to make sure Chrome users are aware of your awesome apps.
Chrome Webapps Are Nothing Without, Well, the Web

I’ve tried to emphasize in the past the importance of internet connectivity in making sure that the web generation of computer products such as Chrome OS devices are a success. Because of this I’ve done a bit of coverage on wireless companies and how they play an important role.
Despite some of the conventional thinking out there that wireless operators are just “dumb pipes”, the reality is that they play an important role in the future of the mobile internet. No other companies out there have the infrastructure for us to connect to the web no matter where it is that we are.

Peter Kafka from All Things Digital is reporting that the Chrome Web Store could be delayed as late as December, according to developers that have talked off the record with him.
Some optimistic webapp developers are still hopeful for a mid-November release.
We heard a few months ago from a Google developer advocate at a gaming conference (who is now no longer with the company) that the Chrome Web Store would be launched in October. It seems that Google is going to miss that target.
More Early Chrome Web Store Features Launched

Google’s own webapp directory, the Chrome Web Store, is slated to be release next month. They’ve been working with developers over the past few weeks to fine-tune things, and announced that there are some more features available in the developer preview such as payments and the ability to upload visual elements to add a enticing look to prospective users.
It appears that Google is making sure that developers use their Checkout service for payments, since they are urging developers to set up a merchant account. Since I’ve seen no other payment options available as of yet for the Store, it may be a boon to the service since it does not have widespread adoption as of yet.

Here’s a look at some of the best Chrome Experiments that have been in the directory. It’s great to see that all of this is done within the browser.
This video has been out for a while so if you’re interested in more Chrome Experiments to try out you can see some of the ones that I have profiled in the past.
