The Cr-48 Tracker Gets Killed

Posted on 01. Feb, 2011 by in Chrome OS, News

flattr this!

The Cr-48 tracker, which has been used by Chrome OS Pilot Program hopefuls to see if a laptop was headed to their door, has ended its run. I had noticed this morning that there was traffic coming here from the Cr-48 tracker website, which was because the app had been replaced by links to Chrome-themed websites, including this one.

trackercr48A. Gamer’s proclamation.

The application’s developer, A. Gamer, took to our forum recently to provide a lengthy explanation how the app worked and to say that it would not be around for much longer because of financial reasons.

One of the most interesting tidbits of information that he did provide was that over 200,000 unique IP addresses ended up checking the tracker. If Google’s plan for the Pilot Program was to see the viability of Chrome OS, these numbers should give them some motivation that perhaps there is a market out there.

Granted this was for a free laptop, so the question is, if you don’t get a Cr-48 will you buy a Chrome OS device when they become available?

I will definitely buy one once they become available – of course I haven’t received a Cr-48 so who I am to be judged? :-)

But I think the hardware specs were purposely shorted so that when the real devices come to market most of us Uber-Google geeks will still want one, even those who have received the cr48.

…the funny thing about the tracker site being down, is there was a shipping ETA date of 01/31 for one in my zip code, I kept checking it all night only to discover late last night that the site went down.

    OH THE AGONY! :-O

I wonder if Google will be working with one of its initial Chrome OS manufacturers (Acer, Samsung) on creating a marquee device like they did with the Nexus series for Android…

i will buy one if they’re cheap… maybe $200-$300 dollars. more than that wouldn’t be worth it. but i love the idea.

Yeah I’ not sure or could guess how Google could team up with manufacturers like they did with HTC and Samsung, it would interesting to see the “with Google” label on the laptops.

They should be cheap – I agree – I wouldn’t spend more than $400 for a browser – as simple, intuitive, fast, secure or innovative it is, it MUST be cheap or NO ONE will buy it.

I will miss the tracker .. I also advice for notification of shipment where you set up Account UPS/ FexX link address with email then package enter dev system send out notification of inbound shipment .. I have deal with Company’s send out Point of Purchase displays and PR Samples that did not order and did not want …
