“The Wilderness Downtown” Chrome Experiment Featuring Arcade Fire

In what is easily the most original Chrome Experiment yet, the folks at Google have teamed up with director Chris Milk and the band Arcade Fire to launch “The Wilderness Downtown”. It is a HTML5 browser based experience, and one you should check out.
When you go to the site, it will ask you for your hometown address. Depending on your broadband speed, it may take some time to load. At this screen, if you hover your cursor over the flocks of birds they will fly away.
There is a disclaimer that lets you know the experience is heavy on computer resources.
This film is processor intensive. Please shut down other programs and close unnecessary browser tabs. Doing this will enhance your viewing experience. Thanks.
The experience in itself is like an interactive music video, with Google Maps and Street Views of the address you put in doing a montage over someone running, possibly away from their old life in their hometown.
Browser windows pop up and disappear, giving the experience several different windows to look at, something that can be formulated using HTML5.
You are even given the opportunity to write a postcard to your former self, and given the option at the end to be able to have your postcard featured on Arcade Fire’s tour.
Browser technology is just getting to be so interactive and personalized it’s impressive. “The Wilderness Downtown” expresses just that. Hopefully we’ll see more creative Chrome Experiments in the near future.
